SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE

In 2004, the Staffordshire Drug Action Team commissioned DTL to undertake a diagnostic review of the Tier 3 prescribing service provision in South Staffordshire and to make recommendations as to how such treatment could be more effectively delivered.

The aim of this review was to examine ways to address the long waiting lists and the problems being experienced in increasing numbers in treatment. DTL consultants, working closely with the local provider agencies, identified the systemic problems that were militating against clients receiving treatment within the NTA guidelines.

The review included analysis of provider data, the use of existing resources and the design of current provision. Effective models of service delivery tailored to the needs of the local population would then become more attainable. The level of expertise and experience within the DTL team, including the involvement of its medical and nursing staff, was an incentive for provider agencies to be positive about the review and eager to sign up to its aims of improving treatment.

“At all times I found employees of DTL to be professional in their approach and felt the services and the local methods of delivery were well researched prior to the researcher visiting the area. A vast amount of experience was made available and additional expertise was brought in when the researcher felt that it was necessary… The final report issued was well written, logically set out and felt by commissioners to be fair; recommendations were sensible and had been tailored to fit with wider plans that were being taken forward by the partnership. The document will be a useful tool in performance managing the services in question.”
